The Project
Development and piloting of holistic sanitation service provision in Vanuatu. The project includes aligning government standards, practices, processes and information delivery mechanisms to promote more effective sanitation actions at village level to improve overall public health.
Our Involvement
Socio-economic and political analysis of existing sanitation and hygiene service provision.
Summary and gap analysis of existing national sanitation and hygiene education and behaviour change materials.
Development of a systems approach to sanitation and hygiene service provision aligning the existing national WASH training packages to reflect gaps identified.
Strengthening the village management of sanitation provision through empowering traditional governance structures to embed state government endorsed sanitation and hygiene principles.
Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project

Under the Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP), UNICEF is supporting WASH activities in affected areas including restoration of boreholes, piped water schemes, protection of springs, community water management through DWSSP process and other ancillary infrastructure using build back better principles where appropriate.

Technical assistance to communities and humanitarian partners in Drinking Water Safety and Security Planning (DWSSP) (an adapted Climate Resilient Water Safety Planning methodology) as part of recovery programming from Tropical Cyclone Idai.
Development of DWSSP resources and training materials for Zimbabwe including for WASH in Health Care Facilities and WASH in Schools.
Training of NGO, local and provincial Government of Zimbabwe facilitators.
Wai Nui - Vanuatu Accessible Wash Project

The Project
The project will seek to increase knowledge and healthy practices in relation to hygiene behaviour throughout households in target communities in Southwest Tanna, Vanuatu. The project will also seek to ensure that all community members have access to safe and dignified household toilets and to perennial, safe drinking water. To ensure water and sanitation infrastructure and initiatives are sustained beyond the project life there will be a strong emphases on improved WMC governance, including the promotion of participation and leadership in WMCs by women and people with disabilities.

Engineering design of 7 gravity fed piped water systems to Vanuatu Department of Water Resources standards.
Capacity building of local technical and project management staff.
Review of community water safety plans and facilitation of Government of Vanuatu approvals.
Geodatabasing of location based water data.

The Project
Development of the WASH resilience package for Vanuatu schools based on the Climate Resilient Water Safety Planning (CR-WSP) methodology.
Our Involvement
A desk review of ‘Water Safety Planning in Vanuatu and its application to schools’, examining how the water safety planning approach can best be used in WASH in Schools (WinS) programming.
Interview of Key Informants to establish user experience, challenges and recommendations of existing water safety planning methods.
Development of water safety planning resources for schools in Vanuatu in line with comments and feedback from a range of WinS stakeholders.
VANUATU WASH in Schools Facilities Guide

The Project
Development a WASH in schools (WinS) facilities design and installation package by adapting existing and developing new designs, installation instructions and material lists that will be easily interpreted by school communities.
Gap analysis of existing construction materials.
Extensive stakeholder consultation on the content, approach and pedagogy.
Development of 3D CAD models and drawings for all designs in Trimble Sketchup and Layout software packages.
Development of bills of quantity and construction instructions for each technology type.
